The Photocast Network Focus Ring - Episode #18 - Shadow & Light
The Focus Ring returns with a new format where each contributor submits 2 of their own images to discuss the topic of Light & Shadow. Contributors Chris Marquardt (Tips from the Top Floor), Jeff Curto (The History of Photography and Camera Position), Martin Bailey (Martin Bailey Photography Podcast) and Ibarionex Perello (The Candid Frame & Shooting with Alas) join together to discuss the importance of shadow in the creation of a successful photograph. The diverse selection of photographs can be found below.
Let us know what you think of that format and what topics you might be interested in hearing discussed on the show. And yes, I realize I announced the show as being episode #13 when it’s actually #18. It reminds me that there was a lot of dust on this old podcast. If I get a good response to the program, I hope to produce these once a month.

Please do more.
Could you also find more podcasts to join PCN? I have enjoyed the ones listed but some of them are no longer casting.

It’s great to see that the Focus Ring podcast is still alive!

Great show–love the in depth discussion of just a few photos. Some of you do this individually in your own podcasts, but never as a group. Also really enjoyed how technical limitations (film/digital, formats, metering) affect the artistic process. Well done.

Please do more, guys, and in weeks rather than months! Loved the photographs and the discussion from your (by now) very familiar voices. Perhaps the best PCN episode to date.
We all know how much our perception of an artist or our knowledge of the context of an artwork affects the way we see the work but hearing you all talk about the pieces changed the way I saw the results. (Particularly true of Jeff’s observation about the tree trunk in Martin’s shot.)
Would love to see some prints one day. Perhaps a roaming PCN exhibition?

I love the new direction you took this podcast. I love the theme focus and the conversation about the images from people that know what they are talking about. Keep up the great work.

I just finished listening to the most recent podcast and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. It never occurred to me until you mentioned it, that the photography podcasts which I listen to focus primarily on gear, technique, inspiration and process, but spend very little time analyzing the output - actual images. I love this new direction, and I look forward to future episodes.
Thank you,
Scott

After listening to episode #18 of this podcast while viewing the images online, there is only one word that I can think of to describe it: MASTERCLASS. I learned more about what goes into making really great images from this podcast than the last three photography books that I read. I cannot wait for the next episode!

I love the new idea for the Focus Ring podcast! It was truly inspiring for me to listen your discussion about the beautiful images. Please continue the podcast in this form. I love it!
I have one comment that your discussion brought to my mind: It’s not always about exposing for the highlights
Photography is all about light and shadow. Especially black and white photography.
Overexposing frame on purpose can lead to some interesting shots, images that our eyes can’t see in real life.
In this shot I overexposed the frame by 1 stop to make my own shadow the main subject in the frame and deliberately overexposing the rest of the frame . I hope you’ll find this shot interesting:

Keep up the great work guys, and I can’t wait for the next episode.

I think I could count the number of podcasts I have listened to more than once on one hand, but this one is on the list. I do think it would be helpful to have the photographs in the downloaded file (as Jeff does with most of his), but I really enjoyed listening to this discussion. More, please, and thank you.
(Piotr, that’s a very cool picture!)

First, let’s take a minute and consider the amazing world in which we live… Illinois, California, Japan, and Germany! Truly a worldwide podcast!
Second, LOVED the podcast. I cast my vote for YES, do this again! Too many podcasts and news articles focus on the equipment or people and not photos. Please do this again, I so enjoyed it.

Great to hear you all together. I thought this was a great idea. The mix of approaches and discussions by each worked very well. Certainly gets my vote for doing it again.

Really enjoyed hearing you talk about your photos. Thank you.
Lots of podcasts on photography talk about other things, few discuss actual photos. More would be great! Thanks again.

Followed the links from today’s ProPhotoResource.com email and LOVED the podcast. Great to be able to look at the images while they were being discussed. Can’t wait for more.
